Teton Pass Closed Through Tuesday After Mitigation Slide
Popular Stories
The Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center (BTAC) had previously warned of "high" avalanche danger above 7,500 feet due to recent heavy snowfall and intense winds. In response, WYDOT crews closed to road to initiate mitigation at 3:00 a.m. Monday. While the goal of these missions is to protect travelers by releasing unstable snow, the sheer size of the slide in Glory Bowl exceeded initial expectations, dumping a significant amount of snow directly onto the pass.
Extended Closure Details
Commuters should prepare for an extended detour. WYDOT has officially estimated the reopening time for Tuesday, Dec. 23, between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.. A dozer is currently working to move the dense, heavy slide material, but the process is slow and requires several hours of dedicated labor.

Respect the Red Flags
This event serves as a red flag for anyone eyeing the backcountry this week. When a controlled blast brings down enough snow to bury a major highway, it’s a clear signal that the snowpack is highly sensitive. Avoid steep, wind-loaded terrain and keep a close eye on the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center and WYDOT for updates on the backcountry and roadways.
