TGR Nominated for 12 Powder Awards

Powder Magazine photo.

Winter has arrived. Snow is falling, resorts are opening, and the Powder Video Awards have released their nominations. We caught up with TGR co-founder Steve Jones about the announcement. "We are excited to be nominated for twelve Powder Video Awards. The athletes and production teams worked so hard to make these films and it's always humbling to see the industry acknowledge that with awards nominations. Hats off to everyone on this list."

The nominations are below.

Photo of the Year: Nic Alegre

Nic Alegre joined the TGR team this year and was an instant addition to the family for his ability to capture truly stunning moments in the mountains. He headed down to the Moab Desert and the La Sal Mountains with Colter Hinchliffe and Tim Durtschi to ride a place more known more for its climbing than skiing. The result...a stunning adventure of exploration.

Line of the Year: Ian McIntosh & Sammy Carlson

This winter Ian McIntosh boarded a beaver plane and flew deep into the Tordrillo mountains for a month long winter camping trip. The goal... to climb and ski massive spine lines, each visible from their small camp built deep in the Alaskan wilderness. The culmination of this hard work was a line in a section dubbed the "Gnar Wall".

The skiing was the definition of this year's film title, Tight Loose. Ian almost washes out while checking speed, but somehow miraculously rides out of a double air.

Sammy Carlson has the inhuman ability to bring tricks to the backcountry that few could land in a controlled environment. To increase the difficulty Carlson links these up together, often landing switch in deep powder. The Powder Awards took notice, nominating Carlson for Line of the Year. We think it's well deserved.

Best Powder: Sammy Carlson

Just like all of us Sammy Carlson loves a deep powder day. Unlike most of us, he uses this surplus of snow to paint a ridiculously steezy picture on the mountain. Congrats Sammy!

Best Air: Sammy Carlson

Sammy Carlson, places himself in the record books as the first skier to hit a “ski-flying” long jump with freestyle intent. Carlson not only spun himself from the lip of a jump designed to send skiers upwards of 500 feet, but began many descents into the jump switch.

“When we showed up it was a ghost ramp. It not been hit in twenty years,” declares Carlson. “The people helping me from the community were just as committed as I was to hitting the ramp. It was a true team effort.”

Best Female Performance: Angel Collinson

For the third year in a row Angel Collinson has proven that she one of the top big mountain skiers in the world, male or female. Starting off the season in Jackson Hole, she knocked off many of the classic runs that loom over the mountain town with fellow female ripper, Hadley Hammer. Her season was cut short due to an injury in Alaska, but we are proud of Angel and excited for her upcoming season.

Best Male Performance: Nick McNutt & Sammy Carlson

As you can tell Sammy Carlson is all over this list for the work he did with The Sammy C Project. He deservedly earned his nomination in this category. Joining him is Nick McNutt for his performance in Tight Loose. Three years ago Nick McNutt won Breakout Performance for his role in Almost Ablaze. Is this the year he claims the big prize?

Best Editing: The Sammy C Project

Films live and die in the edit bay. We appreciate the Powder Video Awards taking the time to recognize the hard work that went into The Sammy C Project.

Best Cinematography: Tight Loose

At TGR we have some of the best action sports cinematographers in the world. Utilizing cutting edge technology, including gyro-stabilized systems, drones, and RED cameras, they capture these athletes and locations in the most unique way possible.

Best Documentary: The Sammy C Project

Even at a young age Sammy Carlson already has a long and nuanced story to tell. Taking two years to film and produce, The Sammy C Project explores Sammy's early years and follows him on his adventures today.
