Swiss Hikers Escape Avalanche

On Saturday at around 12:40 PM on Western Switzerland’s Allalinhorn, four hikers were caught in an avalanche.

While the party was attempting to return to the Saas-Fee ski area, the avalanche lodged two people into a crevasse while the other two were partially covered by the snow. Fortunately, they managed to self-rescue and emerged unharmed.

Just this past year, 19 people were killed in Swiss avalanches. With sudden bouts of snowfall and warm temperatures lingering, the risk of avalanche danger increases. If you’re planning on heading out into the backcountry, be aware of your surroundings and make sure you have the proper equipment in case of emergency. These folks clearly knew what they were doing and needless to say, it paid off.
