Ski racing’s season-ending showdown is returning to North America once again.
Sun Valley Resort in Idaho has been selected to host the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Finals in 2027, featuring downhill, super-G, giant slalom, and slalom races for both men and women. Only a select few will leave with crystal globes, the sport’s most coveted trophies.
Pete Sonntag, COO of Sun Valley Resort, reflected on the announcement:
"Welcoming the World Cup Finals back to Sun Valley is both a tremendous honor and a testament to the dedication of our team, the vision of our owners, and the support of the community. The 2025 Stifel Sun Valley Finals proved that North American resorts can deliver a world-class racing experience with unmatched spirit and hospitality, and we’re excited for the opportunity to represent again in 2027.”
Sun Valley last hosted the World Cup Finals in 2025, marking the resort’s first time hosting a stop on the global tour since 1977. Thousands of fans packed the finish corral to watch the world’s best alpine skiers go fast, and they were not dissapointed.

The week produced moments that quickly entered U.S. ski racing lore. Lindsey Vonn returned to the World Cup podium on home snow. At 40, she became the oldest woman to podium at a World Cup. Mikaela Shiffrin closed the season in vintage Shiffrin fashion, claiming her 101st career World Cup victory in slalom. The win marked her return after a crash that left her with a punctured abdomen months earlier.
“We’re proud to once again showcase the best of U.S. alpine racing at this iconic destination.” - Sophie Goldschmidt, President and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard
The World Cup Finals cap the entire alpine season. Only the top-ranked athletes qualify, with season-long titles decided. Hosting requires elite terrain, meticulous snow prep, and major logistical coordination. Sun Valley proved in 2025 it can deliver at the same standard as the European vangaurds.
Come March 2027, the ski racing world will descend on the American West. For racers, it’s a shot at globes on a classic U.S. venue. For fans, it’s a chance to witness history unfold at home.
