Sugar Bowl Announces $100M in Upgrades

Sugar Bowl Resort is undergoing a $100 million upgrade, including a new 8-person gondola, Village Lodge renovations, and enhanced terrain parks. The Lake Tahoe-area resort remains committed to its independent spirit while modernizing lifts and freestyle terrain for future generations.

Sugar Bowl Resort just announced its biggest transformation in decades. This summer, the historic, fiercely independent California ski area will begin work on a sweeping $100 million revitalization plan.

Christina Schwartz, Sugar Bowl’s executive director of marketing and revenue, described the project as “the most transformative capital improvement plan in out 86-year history,” in an email to POWDER.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the first phase of renovations begins with the Village Lodge, including a new two-tier deck, kitchen, and locker room slated for completion by the 2025 winter season. The following spring, Sugar Bowl says it will replace its 4-person gondola with an 8-passenger Doppelmayr system in addition to renovating its Main Lodge.

Preserving the character and identity of Sugar Bowl is a big part of the renovation plans, according to Schwartz. Sugar Bowl is home to California’s first ski lift, funded and named after Walt Disney, in 1939. The resort aims to honor its heritage through the revitalization, by not fundamentally changing the feel of the resort throughout the process. They are even retaining the original SF based architectural firms that helped design and build Sugar Bowl's original buildings.

We're excited to see how Sugar Bowl's facelift turns out!
