NOAA Winter 2024-25 Forecast: What Snow Enthusiasts Need to Know
Who's next in line for freshies? NOAA gives their best guess.
As we dive deeper into winter 2024-25, NOAA’s updated seasonal forecast sheds light on what snow lovers can expect for the remainder of the season. With La Niña conditions in play, this winter promises a mix of snowfall surprises and regional variability.
La Niña's Influence
A weak La Niña event is underway, marked by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and east-central Pacific. While La Niña typically brings distinct weather patterns, its current mild strength could lead to greater variability in snow and temperature trends across the U.S.

Temperature Outlook
Expect below-normal temperatures stretching from the Pacific Northwest to the Northern Plains, along with southeastern Alaska. These cooler conditions could spell excellent snow preservation for resorts in these areas. Conversely, above-average temperatures are predicted for the southern U.S., East Coast, and parts of New England.

Precipitation and Snowfall Trends
The precipitation forecast looks favorable for regions like the Pacific Northwest, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and the Northern Rockies, which could see above-average snowfall. Unfortunately, areas such as the Southwest and Central Plains are expected to face drier conditions, putting pressure on snowmaking operations. California remains a wildcard, with equal chances of above, below, or near-normal precipitation. However, the Golden State has been under a lingering high pressure system for almost a month now, forcing all chances of precipitation north to the Cascades and Rockies. They haven't seen fresh snow in weeks, and there isn't any to be seen on the 10-day forecast (the waves have been great, though). Hoping to see some action soon for our pals out in the Sierras.
The Road Ahead
As La Niña begins to wane heading into spring, skiers and snowboarders should stay tuned for updates. While uncertainty exists, the current outlook suggests a season of regional opportunities. For those planning trips, targeting northern and mountain-heavy areas could maximize powder days this winter.
