Video: Bene Mayr Outskis an Avalanche

Editor's Note: TGR understands the inherent risks with winter backcountry activity and urges anyone going out to have the proper knowledge, equipment, a partner, and a plan. For more information on how to stay safe in the backcountry, check out TGR’s annual Safety Week series.

This is terrifying. German freestyle skier Bene Mayr had a close call last week when an avalanche broke beneath him in Switzerland. He rode the sluff for a few moments, before pointing it straight and beelining it out of there.

According to Mayr, "I knew this could happen and I had a plan if it would. Go straight and be faster than the snow." If you think a face is going to slide, it's not a good idea not to ski it. That being said, outskiing this slide is an incredible feat, and most people agree that when caught an avalanche, you fight like hell to get out of it.

We're glad you're okay, Mayr!

Avalanche conditions in the Pyrenees are looking pretty hairy, at least based on this recent Instagram post by Álvaro Penadés. The video shows Penadés triggering two sizable slabs via cross-slope ski-cuts. He manages to avoid being caught in either slide, but the first clip seems like a close call, especially had the slide triggered above him.
