Tragic Skiing Accident Claims Life of Williams College Freshman at Jiminy Peak

A 19-year-old freshman at Williams College, Alex Kemp, tragically lost his life following a skiing accident at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Hancock, Massachusetts, on January 6, 2025.

Kemp, originally from New Jersey, was skiing on the black diamond Cutter Trail when he went over an embankment and suffered significant head trauma. Despite wearing a helmet, he was pronounced dead on January 7 at Baystate Medical Center.

Kemp was a dedicated cross-country and track runner at Williams College, known for his motivation and team spirit. He aspired to pursue a doctorate in computer science. His professors and coaches remembered him as a dedicated, motivated, and thoughtful individual, marking his death as a profound loss to the community.

In a statement, Williams College President Maud Mandel expressed the sorrow felt by the entire college, offering condolences to Kemp’s family, friends, and teammates:

“I know you will join me in thinking about Alex’s family; his friends, teammates and coaches on the track and cross country teams,” he said. “I am also holding room in my heart for the first responders and medical professionals who treated him after the accident.”

The Berkshire State Police Detective Unit is investigating the incident, with full cooperation from Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort. There is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved.

The loss of a young life in such a tragic manner serves as a reminder of the inherent risks involved in skiing, even for experienced skiers.

Our thoughts and deep condolences are with the Kemp family and friends.
