Aspen Highlands Hints at a May Reopening

Aspen Highlands might re-open in May pending local guidelines and snowpack. Wikimedia photo.

Aspen Ski Company stated that they may re-open Aspen Highlands in May if conditions and local regulations allow. Currently, all Alterra resorts are closed due to COVID-19, but staff has been maintaining and grooming Highlands in the event of a late-season re-opening. Some parts of the resorts are currently open to uphill access, and locals have been taking advantage of the opportunity to get some human-powered turns in. A strong snowpack and lots of late-season snow could make a May re-opening possible, but this is all dependent on whether the state of Colorado and the local Pitkin County government will ease restrictions on businesses.

Last week, California’s Mt. Baldy re-opened at extremely limited capacity, becoming the first North American ski resort to re-open during the COVID-19 crisis. Mt. Baldy is operating with strict social distancing rules in place to protect the health and safety of guests and employees. It remains to be seen if other resorts will use a similar model if they can re-open.
