I am going to go on record and say that the Micon is my favorite ski jacket of the season. I can say this because out of my three favorite jackets this year, this is the one that I grab the most to head up into the mountains.
I’ll be the first to admit that $799 for a jacket seems pretty insane, but if you’re lucky enough to have a fat bank account, are an Arc’teryx athlete like Eric Hjorleifson or are a TGR gear reviewer, then you’ll be one of the lucky few to sport this jacket for the 2011-’12 season. As with anything Arc’teryx makes, the Micon is industry leading when it comes to technology, features and fit. They do not mess around or cut corners with the Micon.
Let’s talk about comfort first. This jacket just feels right from the moment you put it on. It’s a Coreloft insulated piece with an extra comfortable snag-free Coreline torso liner. Putting on this jacket is kind of like slipping into a luxurious and non-bulky sleeping bag. The articulated elbows and no-lift gusseted underarms mean that the jacket will move with you but will not pull or bunch in any uncomfortable way. Awesome!
The top of the line GORE-TEX® Pro Shell three-layer construction ensures that you stay warm and dry with the best, most durable waterproof and breathable technology on the market. The Micon also features GORE-SEAM® tape for better waterproofing and the WaterTight external zippers are nice and thin for less bulk and feature Arc’teryx’s benchmark functionality.
For those of you like me who run away from “alpinist” styled ski gear, don’t worry. Arc’teryx didn’t go technical dorky with this piece at all. The Micon looks legit and oozes style. The relaxed fit does not look “techy” and is long enough to keep snow out and warmth in. I absolutely hate short jackets and cannot understand why anyone would want cold air or snow seeping in while they’re skiing or riding in deep pow. This jacket is cut for performance and comfort.
Other features to note about this jacket are the mesh lined underarm vents, helmet compatible storm hood, internal goggle pocket, cuffs big enough to fit over gloves (this is a must for me), handy internal pockets, arm pocket and powder skirt with gripper elastic and a snap closure. The only changes that I would like to see on future versions of the Micon are wrist gaiters (I love wrist gaiters!), a headphone cord pull through from the inside pocket and a larger chin guard. All of these items are minor, but would be great to see at this price point.
So, if you want the best possible jacket this winter, then the Micon is what you need. Good luck finding a better jacket. It’s truly a special piece.
