Woke up at 5:30 am to drive from D.C to a town called Sperryville Virginia. As soon as we got there a group of older dads were screaming and almost in a sense pregaming for the hike.
Old Rag Mountain is 3,291 ft with a gain of 1,355 ft during the hike. It starts off pretty easy for the first .8 mile of the 9.5 round trip.
Once you get 3 miles into the hike it gets very steep and you have to navigate through crevices and gap rock splits that lead to a never ending fall.
At this point you can almost see the top and the journey you will have to go through to get there. The majority of the route is marked with a blue line spray painted on various boulders. As you gain elevation the small creeks have turned into frozen sheets of ice on the inclines.
There a huge boulder near the middle of the rock scramble that is famous for its appearance. It is somehow magically stuck between two rock walls.
If you make it past the rock scramble you will be invited to an insane view of the protected Shenandoah National Park with Skyline drive in the distance. I decided to utilize my Yeti koozie apparatus to keep my IPA at a consistent temperature.
