Woman Swept Over Waterfall Near Emerald Bay

The view from Eagle Falls. Wikipedia Photo.

A young woman passed away last Friday after losing her footing at Eagle Falls, near Lake Tahoe in California. The popular outlook close to Emerald Bay is famous for its rushing waterfall that’s fed by the Sierra Nevada snowmelt. Currently, the waterfall is moving extremely fast due to the record amount of snowfall melting in the area. According to CBS Sacramento, Stephanie Espinosa was sitting in one of the nearby pools and slipped when she tried reaching for a branch and was subsequently carried away by the moving waters. A Gofundme has been established in light of the tragedy to support Espinosa’s two teenage sons.

In response to the incident the North Tahoe Fire Protection District released a statement:

“Our message is to help visitors understand the dangers inherent to our beautiful region, and especially after this record winter, our creeks, rivers, waterfalls and lake carry many dangers that visitors need to be aware of. Our only hope is that this tragic accident will help others to take heed and use extreme caution when they are recreating in the area.”
