Stowe Chairlift Fails, Prompts 150+ Evacuations

NBC5 Burlington news reports on the chairlift evacuation at Stowe.

After Stowe’s Lookout Double Lift experienced an electrical system failure early Sunday, Ski Patrol had to evacuate approximately 160 skiers and snowboarders from the lift. According to the Burlington Free Press, the auxiliary engine failed to restart the lift, and the chairs were stuck in place, prompting patrollers to lower passengers using ropes, while some took matters into their own hands, jumping off the lift themselves.

The Northeast is in the middle of an extreme cold snap, and several guests were treated for minor cold-related issues. Stowe’s temperature averaged 12 degrees with blowing snow and wind on Jan 20, the day the lift failure occurred.

A state inspector visited the mountain on Monday to check out the system, which will likely be running again by the weekend. The lift was built in 1979 and Stowe has not performed a chairlift evacuation in nearly a decade.
