BEARTOOTH PASS, Wyo. — Tragedy struck the Beartooth Pass region of Wyoming on Saturday when a young skier died after tumbling roughly 2,000 feet while attempting to climb and ski a steep, technical chute.

According to the Cody Enterprise, 19-year-old Benjamin Fern Tesseneer, of Bozeman, Mont., was hiking with his sister on Beartooth Pass in the lead-up to the fatal accident.

Reports indicate that after ascending 1,000 feet of the 2,000-foot shot, Tesseneer’s sister opted to stay put, but the victim decided to continue upward. However, near the top of his line, the 19-year-old allegedly lost his footing and tumbled the full 2,000 feet.

Tesseneer was not wearing a helmet.

Local ski patrol was first to respond, but after 40 minutes of CPR without result, the team decided to suspend their efforts. Tesseneer was life-flighted to Yellowstone Regional Airport by the Red Lodge Search and Rescue, but medical teams were unable to resuscitate him.

The Park County Coroner listed the cause of death as severe head and chest trauma.
