It is uncertain what kind of shark was involved with the attack, but many speculate it was a tiger shark. Wikipedia Photo.

A man vacationing in Maui this Saturday died from a shark attack. According to CNN, 65-year-old Thomas Smiley was out for a swim off the Kaanapali Shore Resort when the shark attacked him.

Witnesses to the attack found Smiley unconscious, floating in the water. Upon closer inspection, they discovered that his entire left leg was missing. They quickly pulled him to shore to perform CPR, however, the situation was so dire that little could be done and Smiley succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The kind of shark involved with the attack has not been confirmed, but many speculate it was a tiger shark.

This is the sixth shark attack for Hawaii this year and the first fatal shark attack for the island since 2015. The last death was in 2015, when a snorkeler was killed by a shark just off Maui. In response to the recent incident, signs have been posted along the beach to warn other beachgoers.

I was swimming at Kaanapali Beach once and the local paper the next day reported a guy had been bitten by a shark.  The paper reported the guy’s profession as ‘Professional Shark Hunter’.  It struck me as both odd and karmic.
