Ever since the 2003 documentary Blackfish showcased the brutal conditions, inherent problems, and deaths associated with SeaWorld's orca shows, the company has experienced massive public scrutiny. This prompted SeaWorld to end orca shows in their San Diego location, citing changing visitor values along with new government regulations.
SeaWorld seems unable to rid themselves of scandal. Today the Orlando Sentinel confirmed that SeaWorld employees have been posing as animal rights activistic in order to spy on critics, including PETA. This acknowledgment by SeaWorld comes seven months after PETA accused them of spying. The animal rights group went public with evidence that an employee attended protests and made incendiary comments on social media while under cover. The employee was placed on paid leave, but is now back working full-time at the company.
SeaWorld's stock was down 11 percent as of this afternoon. This is from not only this scandal, but the release of Q4 numbers that resulted in concern over the companies performance.
Chief Executive Officer Joel Manby said SeaWorld's board of directors has "directed management to end the practice in which certain employees posed as animal-welfare activists. This activity was undertaken in connection with efforts to maintain the safety and security of employees, customers and animals in the face of credible threats."
This statement confirms that the spying is institutionalized within the company, not a couple of rouge employees.
"SeaWorld's latest report confirms not only that the company has employed more than one spy to infiltrate and agitate at PETA, but also that it values its spies more highly than the executives who have had their heads chopped off in droves, as at least one of the spies is still working at the company," PETA said in an emailed statement to the Sentinel.
