On Tuesday, it was reported that Pierre Agnès–the 54-year-old CEO of Quiksilver–has been declared lost at sea by French authorities.
According to The Local France, search and rescue efforts were underway Tuesday after Agnès' boat washed ashore without the CEO aboard it. The Local reports that Agnès ventured out on his boat at around 7:30 AM Tuesday morning off the southwest coast of France. Surfer Today is reporting that, at some point during his trip, Agnès told local maritime authorities he would be postponing his return to shore due to fog, and that the boat later washed up at the famed surf spot of Hossegor without Agnès on it around 9:15 AM.
The Local notes that rough seas were present in the area when the boat turned up. Per Global News, two helicopters and two rescue boats are currently searching for Agnès.
Carve Magazine spoke with surf photographer Tim Nunn who was at Hossegor when the boat washed ashore.
“Holy shit, literally just got out of the water," Nunn told Carve. "Everyone at [Hossegor] was looking for him in between sets ... The lifeguards on the beach asked me to look out for a body whilst I was swimming around."
Agnès has been with Quiksilver for 30 years. He became CEO of the brand in 2015.
