Massive Avalanche Cycle Hits Montana’s Flathead Range

Montana's Flathead Range has been getting quite a bit of snow recently, which is generally considered a good thing in the world of winter sports. However, as we all know, lots of snow can, in many cases, lead to instability in the snowpack. And what does instability in the snowpack lead to? Yes, you're quite right— it leads to avalanches.

Our friends over at Montana's Flathead Avalanche Center and Gallatin Nat'l Forest Avalanche Center have been keeping close tabs on snow conditions, as well as investigating previous slides for clues as to what the future may hold. What have they found? Rampant instability and crowns ranging up to 20 feet. With a storm currently dumping even more snow on the region, this is as good a time as any to make conservative decisions when traveling and/or recreating in avalanche terrain. For more information on current avalanche conditions, check out
