An avalanche caught five skiers on Saturday morning at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Everyone survived. The slide was triggered near the top of the freshly-opened Thunder Lift in an area next to the Expert Chutes zone.
The slab broke loose from the base of a cliff with a crown measured around two feet deep and 150 feet wide. A JHMR ski patrol search team armed with two dogs, a Recco device and avalanche beacons immediately began searching the area, uncovering the victims, which included a group of children skiing with the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club.
Avalanche danger was listed as considerable above 7,500 feet in the Teton area according to the Bridger Teton Avalanche Center, thanks to heavy snowfall falling atop weak layers in the snow.
Just when you thought Karl Fostvedt couldn't get any crazier, he decided to hit Corbet's SWITCH. Yeah, and he stomped it. But was it enough to maintain his reign as king of Corbet's? Tough to tell considering the equally impressive runs from Travis Rice and Blaine Gallivan. For now, we'll wait in suspense until the winners are announced this Saturday. Travis Rice’s run at Kings and Queens of Corbet’s 2019 might have been some of the finest snowboarding we’ve ever seen, but the real hero was no doubt Trevor Kennison, who chucked it off the lip aboard his sit-ski. Kennison suffered a life-changing snowboarding injury in 2014 when he crashed on a jump in the backcountry of Vail Pass, Colorado, landing on his back. He has worked with the High Fives Foundation ever since, and competed in the ski race events with dreams of entering the 2022
If first you don’t succeed at a double backflip into Corbet’s, try, try again. Despite exploding from his first attempt, Tristan “Teton” Brown went for it again. The effort and commitment were there, unfortunately, the landing was not. Haunted from being unable to stomp either attempt at the trick last year, the double backie remains to be Brown's greatest arch-nemesis.
