Hilaree Nelson Named TNF Athlete Captain

The professional skier, mountaineer, writer, adventurer, and mother will now be adding team captain to her long list of accolades. Laurel Golio Photo.

If Hilaree Nelson wasn’t already badass enough, The North Face (TNF) just named her to be their new Athlete team captain. She'll be taking the reigns from Conrad Anker, the team's first captain since 1992. Currently, they'll head the team together, but in 2019 Nelson will be the sole captain moving forward.

Named the 2018 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and a staple member of the TNF team for the past 20 years, Nelson is more than qualified to inherit Anker's role—who's held it for the past 26 years. Nelson, who's been skiing since the age of three, is most celebrated for her extensive list of ski mountaineering accomplishments. The first woman to climb Everest and Lhotse in 24 hours and the Makalu La Couloir on Makalu, Nepal—Nelson will ultimately draw from experiences like these to guide the team moving forward.

Mike Ferris, the senior director of global brand management, found Nelson to be a fitting successor to Anker. “Not only is she one of the best ski mountaineers in the world, but she has become a constant force of support, motivation, and vision to her fellow athletes,” Ferris explained in an interview.

Her new position builds on the momentum created through her involvement with TNF's female-focused campaign: Move Mountains. As the new captain of the team, Nelson will act as the voice for the brand and the main liaison for it's more than 50 different athletes.
