This month we celebrate Hilaree Nelson, one of the finest ski mountaineers of her generation.

Hilaree is set to be inducted to the Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame on August 27th for her inspirational feats in mountaineering. Of her numerous extraordinary accomplishments, few are more impressive than summiting both Mount Everest and nearby Lhotse in under 24 hours — becoming the first woman to ever bag two 8,000-meter peaks within a day’s time.
Each year the Colorado Snowsports Museum inducts a new class of athletes to their prestigious hall of fame. “Every class of inductees is different and this year we celebrate individuals who have dedicated their lives to educating, inspiring, and preserving snow sports in Colorado. This class truly represents what the Colorado Snowsports Museum is all about,” executive director Jennifer Mason said in a statement posted to the CSM/HOF website. “We’re proud of the Class of 2023; each person represents a unique area of Colorado and illustrates the fact that Colorado as a whole leads the way in snow sports.”
Throughout her career she has used her influence to address issues such as climate change and to empower young girls and women to follow suit in pushing the limits of what is possible. However, her untimely death in 2022 is a somber reminder never to push yourself past the point of being safe. We are no match for the elements, so if you find yourself in sketchy conditions, or pushing yourself above the level of your ability, it is best to turn around or find safety.

Congratulations to Hilaree and her family for this prestigious honor.
