Glacier National Park Is On Fire

Saturday, August 11th was the hottest day on record in Glacier National Park. 

On this same day, lightning started three different fires in the park. The wind-driven Howe Ridge fire, now estimated between 1,500 and 2,500 acres, claimed multiple buildings around Lake McDonald overnight. Lake McDonald Lodge and campsites and residences around the lake were evacuated while the Going-to-the-Sun Road closed between the foot of Lake McDonald and Logan Pass.

For more information, the park has established a Fire Information Line with updated recorded information: 406-888-7077. If you're in the area, stay safe and follow park protocol. Sadly, Glacier National Park is just one wildfire among the countless spreading across the West. It's extra alarming, however, to see a place known for its ice and glaciers set ablaze.

Rising temperatures and droughts are leading to longer and more severe wildfire seasons. Eric Holthaus for Grist writes, "In 1850, there were 150 glaciers in the area now known as Glacier National Park. Today there are 26. They’ve been there for 7,000 years — but in just a few decades, the glaciers of Glacier National Park will almost surely be gone. By then the park will need a new name. Glacier Memorial Park doesn’t have the same ring to it."

This is just awful. Every year California gets fires and they seem to get worse every year.  I really wanted to visit this National Park and Yosemite…hopefully one day after it recovers from all this I can visit.  Sprinkler Repair Humble TX

Glacier National Park is a real beauty. Last year we went to visit it and it looks real amazing. We need to protect our parks to make our world more beautiful.
