It’s the middle of March, and along with the longer days and warmer temps come other fun things…like the first grizzly bears emerging from hibernation. This past weekend, on March 13, Grand Teton National Park officials reported the first grizzly bear sighting of 2022. The middle of March is a typical time for adult male grizzly bears to emerge from hibernation, while females typically wait until April or even May to see the light of day.

With bear season upon us, it’s important to remember some basic bear safety tips. GTNP superintendent Chip Jenkins reminds us to secure any attractants like food or garbage both in our homes and at any campsites we may use this season. Keep all food and garbage inside bear-resistant containers, secure livestock feed, pet food, compost, beehives, and bird feeders. When traveling in the backcountry, especially while accessing spring ski lines, always carry bear spray and know how to use it. Make lots of noise, be alert for bears and signs of their activity, and do not run (back away slowly) if you do encounter a furry friend.
