The backcountry access gates at Park City Mountain Resort were closed this morning following a decision by the resort’s management. At the moment, backcountry access from the resort will be closed until further notice. Right now a sign has been posted at the backcountry entrance at the top of the 9990 chair lift with the message “backcountry gates closed pending meeting between PC resort management and U.S. Forest Service.” The resort is expected to meet with this U.S. Forest Service on Thursday.

The closure was prompted by two recent fatal avalanches in the backcountry terrain accessible from the resort’s gates. This area known as the Park City ridgeline has seen three deaths in the same general area over the last 13 months.
