California to Close Orange County Beaches Starting May 1, 2020

In an unfortunate but fairly predictable turn of events, some of California's newly-reopened beaches are going back on ice after a weekend of crowds and weak social distancing. A California Police Chief's Association memo sent on Wednesday, available here, said that "After the well-publicized media coverage of overcrowded beaches this past weekend, in violation of Governor Newsom's Shelter in Place Order, the Governor will be announcing tomorrow that ALL beaches and all state parks in California will be closed, effective Friday, May 1st."

However, Governor Newsom ultimately stopped short of closing all of the state's beaches and state parks, only "hard closing" beaches in Orange County. A video of the full announcement is available here. For more information on California's ongoing response to COVID-19, check out the state's dedicated website.
