A group of hikers in the Austrian Alps had to be rescued after their allegedly drunk guide wandered off on his own.
The group of 60 Hungarian tourists set out on a day hike to Preiner Gscheid pass at around 3 p.m. local time Saturday. After about half an hour on the trail, the group stopped for lunch, and realized that their tour guide had vanished.
A member of the group called emergency services to report that he and his daughter were lost in the mountains, and that their drunk tour guide had disappeared, reports Austria’s Krone.

As weather conditions in the Rax mountains deteriorated, a team of twelve rescuers set out to bring the abandoned hikers to safety. The group was led down without any trouble. On their way down, the rescuers and hikers ran into the tour guide — walking down the mountain by himself, with no explanation for his disappearance.

The guide denied drinking, and since there were no injuries, police did not breathalyze him. “All the same, it was a fine line,” Gerhard Rieglthalner, a mountaineering expert for the police, told the Krone. “The man was unprofessional and was not a trained mountain guide.”
A word to the wise: don’t drink and guide. And if you do, don’t lose your hikers.
