Australian Ski Resorts Fighting Fires with Snow Guns

Selwyn Ski Resort in Australia suffered extreme fire damage earlier this month due to the bushfires ravaging the country. Thredbo and Perisher, two resorts just 30 miles south of Selwyn, are facing the same fate unless they can deter the flames in time. To do this, they have started employing their snow guns.

Both ski resorts are in the predicted fire path and they’re attempting to preemptively ward off the fires by spraying the ground that surrounds their offices and buildings with cold water. Perisher recently enjoyed slightly cooler temperatures and a small rain, however the risk of the fires spreading is ever-present across the country. A three-year drought, high temperatures, and strong, erratic winds have all contributed to Australia’s plight this season.
