66 Year Old Man and Lap Dog Fight off 200 Pound Bear

Yepez and his dog Benji. ABC 30 Photo.

Wednesday, August 12th, proved to be a nearly fatal afternoon for 66 year old Vietnam vet, Larry Yepez, and his Yorkshire Terrier, Benji. While walking out to enjoy a relaxing afternoon on his porch, Yepez startled a 200 pound black bear who had been rumaging through his trash, triggering him to charge the porch and both Yepez and Benji.

Rather than running scared, Yepez fought off the bear, who had tackled him to the ground, by throwing a fierce right hook, and kicking him off. Despite his efforts, Yepez credits Benji as his saving grace for nipping at the bears legs and distracting him with annoying small dog barks. Perhaps those yippie dogs are good for something?

However comical, this story surfaces as an ever present reminder to  be bear aware. With the recent fatal attack of a Yellowstone hiker, this summer's bear encounters highlight an issue that many mountain town residents deal with on a regular basis-unwanted encounters. To prevent them, we need to take responsibility, such as maintaining proper food storage, and food disposal, bringing bear spray, etc.

It's important to recognize that we share an environment, and we need to respect each other's boundaries by  keeping bears wild

Wish the bear did more damage… This guy could have stayed inside his house but chose to go outside and throw objects at the bear. The bear is hungry, there is a serious drought and lack of food. Not to mention this is bear country. So he got his TV fame now and another bear will be killed for HIS (Yepez’s) foolish actions. Thanks man…

Dogs that are aggressive towards other dogs are usually: possessive, jealous, territorial, not properly trained by their owners, or have some kind of medical condition. Read this article for better understanding.
