BCA Issues Recall For Some Tracker 4 Beacons

Backcountry Access has issued a safety recall notice on some of their Tracker 4 avalanche beacons. On some units, the plastic mode switch can fall off the transceiver, making it difficult to change from send to search modes in the event of an avalanche. Please go to BCA’s site if you own a Tracker 4 for more information.

BCA’s official release:

Backcountry Access (BCA), in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada, is issuing a voluntary recall of a small number of Tracker4 avalanche transceivers due to a switch plastics production issue.

This issue impacts certain Tracker4 beacons with serial numbers that start with 21H05 or 21H06 sold after June 1, 2021. The affected units may have been purchased as a part of a Tracker4 rescue package or as a standalone unit.

The reason for the recall is a switch plastics production issue that may result in the switch falling off the transceiver. If this occurs, the user would not be able to turn the transceiver on and off, preventing the ability to transmit or search for a discoverable electronic signal in the event of an avalanche. There have been no reported incidents in which the Tracker4 switch issue has contributed to a fatality, injury, or other damage.

Consumers should immediately stop using any Tracker4 avalanche transceivers with serial numbers that start with 21H05 or 21H06. To determine if a unit is affected, look for the serial number inside the battery door. If the serial number begins with 21H05 or 21H06, BCA will replace it with a new unit at no cost. To register for a free replacement unit, complete the Tracker4 Recall Replacement Form.
