For many, Bill Nye is the friendly and familiar face of science. His show Bill Nye the Science Guy graced the airwaves from 1993 to 1999, lightheartedly teaching kids the fundamentals of science. It's clear, however, that the omnipresent threat of anthropogenic climate change has worn into Nye's happy-go-lucky attitude towards science.

In a recently-aired episode of
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Nye was asked to explain a number of concepts related to the Green New Deal, a proposed legislative package intended to address climate change and economic inequality through a broad range of public policy interventions. Unable to remain upbeat about the topic, Nye dropped a few f-bombs. It's an unsettling change for those used to seeing him in the child-friendly setting he is best known for.
