Traveling With Ski/Bike/Surf Gear Just Got *A Little* Cheaper

Bring your gear to far-off places. Max Ritter photo.

For anyone who’s spent any amount of time traveling with large sports equipment like skis, a bike, or a surfboard – you know the frustration. It’s annoying to drag the damn thing through the airport, annoying to keep it under the weight limit, and annoying to pay more than for a regular bag at the check-in counter. Well, if you’re flying American Airlines, those days are gone.

Effective May 21, all domestic American Airlines flights will now treat oversize sports equipment like a regular checked bag. Airlines like Delta have been doing this for years, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction for the already shitty experience of flying. That means a $30 fee on check-in, as opposed to the $150 they have been charging for years.

Watch out for overweight charges, though. According to AA, overweight bags (over 50 pounds) will still be subject to additional charges of $100-$200, or up to $450 for certain international routes.

In similar news, W Hotels has announced it will now pay its customers board bag fees under their
Now Boarding initiative. Basically, the hotel will provide each customer that arrives at their Costa Rica location with a surfboard a $300 voucher redeemable for hotel amenities. Not a bad deal.
