Going on a backpacking trip can mean a lot of things – a fun adventure, great views, friends and family members, and, of course, the best hiking snacks. If you plan to travel a lot of miles, you are going to burn a lot of calories and deplete all your nutrient stores. If you do not adequately plan, it can lead to that dreaded feeling of “hanger,” which is a mix of being hungry and being angry. With the right energy-boosting snacks, you can keep your body well fueled and your entire crew happy.
Eat Calorie Dense Foods
Eating foods full of calories while you are hiking is a good idea. Backpacking and hiking can be strenuous activities, and your body must be able to refuel so that your metabolism will continue running at a high level. If you are not feeding yourself properly, then your metabolism may drop, which can lead to an array of serious issues, including fatigue, dehydration, hypothermia, and hypoglycemia.

A great trail food is dried dates. First, since they are dried, they are much lighter, and they are more calorie-dense than fresher fruits. They are also full of carbs, provide fiber for healthier digestion, and are a much lower glycemic-index food. This means that they will release the carbohydrate-based energy slowly, which is going to give you more sustained energy, rather than just a sugar rush. Dates are also full of nutrients, such as potassium, which helps to reduce cramps, along with Vitamin B6, iron, copper, and magnesium. What this means is that dates are a great snack when hiking or backpacking.
With a bit of preparation, bacon can become a rather cheap form of beef jerky. Make sure to cook the bacon until it is crispy instead of chewy. This is not only going to protect the bacon’s “pack life,” but it will also reduce the amount of weight that has to be carried. Be sure to pack the bacon jerky in an airtight container, and then it can be eaten for a few days.
Generally speaking, the more aged the cheese is, the longer it is going to last outside of the refrigerator. Firm and semi-firm cheeses that are aged will last much longer than fresh, soft cheeses. While mozzarella may seem like a great option, it will probably make you sick if you eat it on the trail.
If you are worried about preserving the cheese if you can make sure to leave it in the original packaging and seal it in another plastic bag. Cut off pieces with a knife and then wrap the cheese backup, resealing the bag when you are done.
Venison jerky is full of protein, low in total fat, and considered one of the healthiest meats available. There is not anything as rewarding as eating the meat you shot and butchered on your own while you are on a backpacking adventure.
