Nutrition Tips for Outdoor Adventures

If you are planning a hiking trip or another type of outdoor expedition, you may be wondering what is best to bring in terms of food and nutrition. Here are some tips for staying energized and full on your next outdoor trip.

Bring Coolers

When traveling with multiple people, it is much easier to ration supplies and carry enough for everyone. This way, you can bring along coolers that will keep meats and other perishable food items cold for anywhere from a few hours on a hot day to virtually freezing in cooler weather. If you do bring these types of foods, make sure to use them up first.

Consider Dense Nutrition

You need much more energy when you are constantly burning calories in activities outdoors. For this reason, you may want to think about bringing along powders to put in smoothies or shakes, which you can load into a blender bottle as a replacement for a meal. For instance, a healthy boost of antioxidants can be achieved through a red superfood powder, and you can have a delicious smoothie in the process. In terms of actual food, try to choose ingredients that are high in vitamins and minerals, rather than empty calories.

Opt for More Nonperishables

When you are going to be exploring for long periods of time, then you should pack nonperishable items. These are usually in the form of nuts, trail mix, whole wheat crackers, and even MREs, or meals ready to eat, which are very high in calories and nutrition. Some staples that hikers and backpackers often grab are granola bars, which come in a convenient and non-messy form, and can be easily fit into a backpack. Staples like fish or beans can be brought along in cans.

Stay Hydrated

When you are engaging in physical activities, you are much more likely to need more water than you would on a daily basis. Try to calculate how much water your body needs in a given day, and then increase that amount by a significant portion to account for the sweat that you will produce and the water that will fuel your body. To save room on water, you should bring a collapsible bottle, or even a silicone pouch that can be worn on your back. A great alternative is a filtered straw, which you can utilize in many rivers and lakes for clean, fresh water.

Pack Emergency Rations

Outdoor adventuring is often alluring because it allows travelers to escape the hustle and bustle of our modern, technology-driven world. However, it is vital to prepare for any possible situation that could keep you out in the wilderness for longer than you intended. Therefore, it is always a good idea to pack more than you think you need, so that you are prepared for anything. The further out you will be going away from civilization, the more you should be prepped for possible issues or disasters.

Get Food from Nature

If you are hiking somewhere near a river, stream, or lake, then you will most likely be able to catch fish as a primary source of food. Fishing gear is often lighter than actually bringing fish to cook, so it can be an inventive way to have meat in your diet without worrying about rotting fish in your pack. Be sure that you have all necessary tools on hand so that your fish is clean and gutted. You should also know how long to cook fish over the fire. If you are more confident, you can also scavenge for nuts and berries, or even hunt some of the local wildlife.

You do not need to worry about having enough to eat or becoming bored with your meals when you are out in nature with your friends, or even by yourself. With these tricks, you should be able to have a wonderful time and stay happy, hydrated, and energized during your trip.
