The Pakistani Military rescued six climbers after an avalanche hit their expedition while attempting to climb the 5,800-meter Melvin Jones Peak in the Hindu Kush. The expedition’s Pakistani guide died in the avalanche, and several of the climbers were injured and ropes and tents were swept away, prompting the rescue. The climbers hail from Italy and Pakistan and were teaming up as the “Pakistan-Italian Friendship Expedition.”
Only a few weeks ago, eight climbers died in an avalanche near Nanda Devi, a 7,434-meter peak in India, including acclaimed guide Martin Moran. This followed a deadly Everest season that claimed 11 lives largely due to overcrowding on the summit ridge.

A team of eight climbers attempting a route on India’s second highest peak, 25,643-foot Nanda Devi, were killed in an avalanche at the end of May. The climbers included four Britons, two Americans, an Australian, and an Indian. A recovery team from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police was not able to reach the accident site until June 23, weeks after the avalanche occurred, due to dangerous conditions.
