The Frozen Chase

Before wearable cameras entered the scene of action sports, professional snowboarder and photographer Mike Basich was a pioneer in self-portraiture—to the extreme. Picture this: setting up a tripod on a snowy night to capture yourself hitting a jump over a road gap, through trees, totally solo. Or, framing an acid drop out of a helicopter with a horseshoe-shaped ridgeline—118 feet above a steep powder landing—and pressing a remote to capture yourself mid-air. Yeah—Basich did both. Here’s a 15-year collection of his greatest work.

Powsurfer

Binding-free boards are arguably the rawest form of surfing snow: Eliminate binders, and a board's every curve becomes the centerpiece connecting riders to their line. At the very least, they'll test your balance and get you ready for shredding the pow. Grassroots Powdersurfing combines various silhouettes with a convex nose that spoons into each turn. Pack one on the next hut trip or throw down in a backyard sesh.
