WINDELLS SUMMER CAMP WITH KAI JONES

Kai and Luke Miele taking the Palmer Lift up.

It was another hot summer on the Glacier at Mt. Hood! I linked up with Kai Jones and a few of his buddies to guest coach at Windells Summer Ski camp and we had ourselves an action packed week of skiing.

The Windells lane has a sick double jump line.

I have been coming to Windells since i was 17 years old so I know how exciting it is for young skiers to get to ski in the summer, it is literally all I thought about at that age and when winter ended getting back on snow was the only thing on my mind!

Flying with the Butterflies, which make the migration past camp every couple of years.

Kai came into the week with a bunch of trick goals and was determined to check as many off the list as he could in the 6 days we had on snow. We were blessed with sunny days, butterflies and freshly salted and shaped features (thanks park crew!) on the Windells lane.

Kai was hyped on the “volcano” feature, a triangle wedge of snow perfect for tossing Rodeos and Side-flips off. We spent a few mornings lapping this feature thanks to the quick rope-tow, and got some great follow cam action off it as well. Other than hitting the Volcano on the Volcano, we had an equally productive session on the Saga Rail where Kai learned back 270 off, lip slide, and a 450 off.

Durtschi flying in the Pro-Park.

The only Tree on the Glacier had to be flipped over.

I am sure if they didn’t close the park from 12-12:30 for a rake Kai and his friends would just ski right through the day, but its also important to eat some lunch, stay hydrated and put on some sunscreen. Kai was good about putting on sunscreen because he saw what happened to his younger brother who had gone to camp the week before and forgot to put it on. Sunburn on the glacier is no joke and my advice is to wear a balaclava all day everyday!

Off-hill camp is just as exciting, from the skatepark and Trampolines there is so much to do for the rest of the day its impossible to get bored. Kai brought his trampoline skis as well, which I tried out on the mega tramp. On the hot days I went to the river to cool off, theres alot of glacier runoff coming off hood and there are some really unique swimming holes around.

Walking off the glacier after a long day of riding!

By the end of the of the camp I was ready for a day off, but I know that Kai and his buddies Luke Fisher and Geo could have kept going for another 6 consecutive days.  The park changes every week as the summer heat changes the landscape of the snowfield day by day but the Windells park crew does a great job of keeping all the park features in tip top shape.  Huge thanks to Windells for a perfect week with the TGR grom crewCheck out the entire Instagram story here!
