Teen Skiers Safely Rescued from Stowe’s Backcountry

On January 20, 2025, three teenagers were safely rescued by Stowe Mountain Rescue after getting lost in the backcountry near Stowe Mountain Resort, Vermont. This event underscores the critical importance of proper preparation and awareness when venturing beyond marked ski areas.

On the evening of January 20, 2025, three teenage skiers were rescued near Stowe resort after entering the backcountry off Spruce Peak. The trio had ventured beyond the resort's boundaries and became disoriented as night fell. Stowe Mountain Rescue found the skiers trapped above a cliff, in the cold and had "started to suffer," a rescuer reports.

Stowe Mountain Rescue promptly initiated a search operation. When they found the trapped skiers, one team member had to climb up the icy cliff and lower each kid down one by one using rope belays. The rescue team ensured that all three individuals were unharmed and safely escorted them back to the resort base.

This incident underscores the inherent risks associated with backcountry skiing, especially for those who may lack adequate experience or preparation. Venturing beyond marked resort boundaries can lead to unpredictable challenges, including difficult terrain, sudden weather changes, and limited visibility.

Authorities emphasize the importance of proper preparation for anyone considering backcountry activities. Essential measures include carrying appropriate safety equipment. Beacons, shovels, and probes are three essential pieces of equipment for exploring the backcountry. Beyond equipment, you should always have a thorough understanding of the terrain, current weather conditions and a solid plan for every potential outcome. It's also crucial to inform someone of your planned route and expected return time.
