Solitude Mountain Resort Enforces Strict Penalties for Rope-Ducking Violations
Popular Stories
In response to a rise in skiers and snowboarders entering closed areas, Solitude Mountain Resort in Utah has implemented stricter penalties for those caught ducking the rope into avalanche closed zones. Individuals found violating closures will face a minimum 30-day suspension of their ski passes.
Ski Patrol Director Doug Catherine emphasized that such actions endanger both the offenders and ski patrol teams conducting avalanche mitigation. He noted that unauthorized entry into closed terrain can delay the opening of new areas, as patrols must ensure all zones are safe before allowing public access.

The resort has experienced challenges this season due to lower-than-average snowfall and warmer temperatures, resulting in a thinner snowpack and increased avalanche risks. These conditions necessitate comprehensive avalanche control efforts, during which it's crucial for guests to respect all closures to maintain safety. Photo: Unsplash / Andrew Meehan
Solitude's management urges all visitors to adhere to posted signs and barriers, emphasizing that the safety of guests and staff is their top priority. They remind patrons that violating closures not only poses serious risks but also leads to significant penalties, including pass suspensions.
