Teenage Snowboarder Falls from Copper Mountain Chairlift, Marking Colorado’s Fourth Incident This Season

An 18-year-old snowboarder fell from the American Flyer chairlift at Copper Mountain, marking Colorado’s fourth chairlift incident this season. Learn more about the accident and chairlift safety tips.

Snowboarder Falls from Chairlift at Copper Mountain, CO, in Colorado’s Fourth Incident This Season

An 18-year-old snowboarder fell from the American Flyer chairlift at Copper Mountain on January 6, becoming Colorado’s fourth reported chairlift incident this ski season. The fall occurred between towers 25 and 26 as the snowboarder prepared to unload. According to the Colorado Passenger Tramway Safety Board, the individual raised the restraint bar prematurely, moved forward, and fell. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported, and inspections revealed no mechanical issues with the lift, pointing to user error as the cause of the fall.

A Concerning Pattern

This marks an unusually active season for chairlift-related accidents in Colorado. Historically, Summit County sees about one such incident every other ski season. However, this winter has already seen four, including a severe fall at Keystone Resort on December 11, where a snowboarder attempting to adjust his bindings fell 47 feet from the Ruby Express lift. He was airlifted to the hospital with significant injuries.

Chairlift Safety Reminders

The Colorado Passenger Tramway Safety Board continues to emphasize rider responsibility for chairlift safety. Proper use of restraint bars and avoiding distractions while seated are critical. Studies show that most falls result from user error rather than equipment failure.

Experts also recommend avoiding backpacks on chairlifts, as they can disrupt balance, and ensuring the safety bar is lowered, especially in windy or unfamiliar conditions.

About the American Flyer Lift

The American Flyer lift, constructed in 2018 by Poma Group, is the longest bubble chairlift of its kind in the U.S. It services intermediate and advanced terrain in the heart of Copper Mountain, one of Summit County’s premier ski resorts.

Safety First on the Slopes

As Colorado resorts experience heavy visitation this season, officials remind skiers and snowboarders to prioritize safety on lifts and slopes. Chairlifts are statistically very safe, but the recent string of incidents highlights the importance of following protocols to prevent accidents.
