After a six-year hiatus, and a adding a shiny, new titanium knee to her anatomy, Lindsey Vonn, the 40-year-old American skiing icon, has made a remarkable return to competitive skiing. In her first World Cup downhill race since the comeback, Vonn secured an impressive sixth-place finish, clocking in just 0.58 seconds behind Italy's Federica Brignone, the race winner.
Vonn's return to the slopes follows a successful right-knee replacement surgery, equipping her with a titanium knee that is showing promise to be just as efficacious as the original joint. Despite the challenges, Vonn showed no restraint in her return, reaching speeds up to 77 mph during the race. Reflecting on her performance, Vonn acknowledged minor mistakes but expressed confidence in her potential, "I know I can be faster."
Continuing her comeback, Vonn participated in the super-G event in St. Anton, finishing fourth. This performance marked her best result since returning to the World Cup circuit.
However, towards the end of a recent training run in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, Vonn experienced a crash. Thanks to her protective airbag, she avoided serious injury and later confirmed, "My bum is sore but otherwise I’m good." Vonn later returned to training the following day, adopting a more cautious approach. She finished 40th among 56 competitors, 3.39 seconds behind leader Sofia Goggia. It may be two steps forward, one step back for a little while for Vonn, but progress nonetheless.
