Lindsey Vonn makes history at 40 with a stunning second-place finish in the World Cup super-G at Sun Valley. The ski legend proves doubters wrong in her comeback season, setting her sights on the 2026 Olympics. Read more on her incredible return to the podium.

Lindsey Vonn wrapped up a remarkable comeback season in classic Vonn style, stepping onto the podium after landing a second place result the World Cup super-G at Sun Valley, Idaho. The 40-year-old ski icon ripped down the steep and technical track before crosssing the line to a roaring crowd. With this podium, Vonn becomes the oldest female Alpine racer to medal in a World Cup event by a staggering six years.

She shared her thoughts post-race on Instagram:

After everything I've been through, I fought my way back to the podium!! I can't even start to describe what this means to me... I have been overwhelmed with emotion and support from so many people. I want to say thank you to everyone who believed in me! Going to enjoy this moment and reflect. More soon!

This marks Vonn’s first World Cup podium since 2018 and a stunning return after undergoing partial knee replacement surgery. Vonn described the intense preparation for days like this:

It’s actually really hard work. But that’s what it takes, putting one foot in front of the other and getting through the hard days. When you keep putting one foot in front of the other, it leads you to a place like today.

Now, with 138 career World Cup podiums in 408 starts, she’s just one race away from tying Renate Goetschl’s record for most World Cup starts by a female racer.

After this taste of the podium, Vonn has her sights set on the 2026 Winter Olympics, aiming to represent Team USA one last time, hopefully adding another Olympic medal to her collection (she already has three.)

Swiss phenom Lara Gut-Behrami took the win in Sun Valley with a blistering time of 1:12.35, securing the season-long super-G title over Italy’s Federica Brignone. Brignone finished third on the day, sealing her second-place ranking in the discipline, while Sofia Goggia rounded out the top three in the season standings.

The 2026 Olympics are gonna be good.
