La Nina Graces Mount Baker Ski Area with 70 FEET of Snow this Season

Usually, closing day at a ski area means sunny skies, pond skimming, and gapping dirt patches after most of the snow has melted. This year, things looked a little different at Washington’s Mount Baker ski area, which closed this weekend after posting over 840 inches of snowfall since November.
Baker set the record for highest snowfall in a season at 1,140 inches (95 feet) in 1999, and averages 640 inches a year. Heavy snowfall, like this year’s, usually occurs during winters with a strong La Nina weather pattern, which brings colder temperature and thus more snow to the already moisture-laden weather in the Pacific Northwest.
