Early Season Avy Tosses Three Skiers in Alberta

As the season gets started, it’s important to remember that avalanches can happen at any time of year. It can be tempting to seek out sketchy lines at high elevation for those first turns of the season, but don’t let stoke get in the way of sound judgement.

Avalanche Canada responded on Monday to three skiers who were thrown roughly 100m by an avalanche on the east ridge of Mt. Patterson in the backcountry near Banff.  The skiers sustained injuries, the worst of which was a head injury and broken ribs, and lost gear.  Luckily there were no burials, and all three skiers were successfully evacuated to a waiting ambulance.

With the arrival of significant snowfall events in the Rockies, both the amount of skiers and the avalanche danger will be rising dramatically. Stay safe out there, everybody.
