This winter’s first big storm, a “bomb cyclone,” just finished dumping snow on the Northeast. The same storm first touched ground in lower Oregon and upper California early last week where it brought 100 mile per hour winds and left multiple feet of snow in the mountains according to the National Weather Service (NWS). “Bomb cyclone” storms are rare on the west coast and this one was so powerful it continued across the Upper Midwest and Plains. This past Sunday, the storm hit the Northeast immediately causing winter weather advisory warnings, school closures, and cancelled flights. On a positive note, the storm deposited more than a foot of snow in 25 different states. Since the NWS started recording snow coverage in 2003, there has never been this much coverage in early December. 46% of the lower 48 states are currently covered with snow. In the Northeast, parts of Maine have received over two feet of snow. Wherever you are, it’s likely there are some great early season freshies to rip so strap on your preferred method of sliding across snow and hit the slopes. Even Hawaii is getting in on the action with six inches forecasted at high elevations.
