NBC Says Screw It, Moves Olympic Party to Cabo San Lucas

After raising some eyebrows by deciding to host its Olympic Hospitality Program for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Jackson Hole, Wyoming–just over 5,700 miles away from where the Winter Games are actually being held in South Korea–NBC has again decided to pivot by moving the hospitality program in the middle of the Olympic program to another famous winter destination: Cabo San Lucas.

NBC's Olympic Hospitality events are a fantastic wine-and-dine experience for the company's biggest programming sponsors represent the pinnacle of the Olympic experience, where world-class chefs and bartenders show off progressive and food and drink menus developed through countless hours of practice over the past four years.

That’s why this year, NBC upped the ante and took their VIP party even more global, choosing to move the event from its original location of Jackson to Cabo.

“We are thrilled to announce that we will be hosting our heralded VIP Olympic party in Cabo San Lucas to celebrate the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics,” NBC Sports spokesman Christopher McCloskey said in an official statement. “In our entire 30-year history of producing the Olympics, we haven't really expanded our reach beyond the host city. And look, Jackson was fun, but the Olympics are international baby! We're taking this party global!"

McCloskey went on to express that while Jackson really helped VIP members feel like they were "on the ground in PyeongChang," ultimately, they had to change plans.

"It turns out Wyoming is pretty cold," McCloskey told TGR.

After considering replacement bids from several prospective host cities, NBC settled on Cabo because of its white sand beaches (that closely resemble the snow in South Korea), the unparalleled access to authentic local cuisine at Senor Frogs, and the opportunity to create Olympic Village-style lodging at one of the many resorts in Cabo.

“It would’ve been predictable—and I’ll even go as far as to say, unoriginal—to host NBC’s VIPs in South Korea,” Gian-Franco Kasper, an International Olympic Committee board member, says. “I encouraged NBC to just say, ‘screw it!’ and party in Cabo, where it’s safe and comfortable.“

“They’ve got quite a few events planned. Should be fun,” said Michael Dowda, the venue’s operations director said in an interview with The Denver Post. Of the events planned, the most impressive may be NBC’s decision to fly Korean-American superstar Chloe Kim back stateside to host a watch party during the final week of the Games.

It’s reported that VIP guests will have the opportunity to mix soju—the unofficial official liquor of Korea—into their all-inclusive margaritas during a pool party, and a K-pop concert performed by an authentic Mexican mariachi band on the night of the closing ceremonies.

“We chose Cabo San Lucas because we wanted a spectacular, luxury winter-esque resort with…conditions that could accommodate the dining and entertainment needs of our client program,” the statement from McCloskey says. “This will be a Winter Olympic experience unlike anything else.”
