5 Crested Butte Airbnb’s For That Last Minute MTB Vacation

Branham Synder boosting in Crested Butte. Nic Alegre photo.

Crested Butte, often referred to as the last great mountain town, is famous for its world-class outdoor activities in both winter and summer. It’s also famous for its attitude. The locals have been there forever, they are the soul of the town, and they aren’t leaving anytime soon if they can help it. This attitude is a huge part of what makes Crested Butte such an attractive destination for skiers, bikers, and all kinds of outdoorsy people who are searching for the type of character that is disappearing from mountain towns.

If you’re looking to visit and catch a glimpse of the ski bum life, Airbnb usually has options far better than what a hotel can offer. So before Crested Butte chases short term rentals out of town, here are five available listings that you might want to check out.

#1) If you’ve got a big group

This huge house sits right in downtown Crested Butte, directly off of Elk Avenue. It sleeps 12 people, so if you’ve got a big squad coming into town (or if you’re a functioning adult with a family) and everyone’s willing to chip in, the $638 per night cost suddenly doesn’t seem all that bad. It’s definitely on the pricey end of the spectrum, but if you need a lot of space, an unbeatable location, and a chill backyard full of Adirondack chairs, this could be the one for you.

#2) If you’re in it for the mountain biking

This condo is kind of the polar opposite of #1: it’s $136 per night, it sleeps four people, and those people probably won’t be spending that much time in it. Since it’s right at the base of Mt. Crested Butte, it offers unparalleled access to the bike trails around it. It also includes ample space for bike storage, and a hot tub to soak in after a long day on the trail. Best of all, it’s one of the few that not only allows but encourages you to bring your dog.

#3) If you’ve got a lot of people but not a lot of money

This two-story condo sleeps 11 people and is only $160 per night. It’s got a grill, a hot tub, two balconies, a river out back, and sick views of the mountain. It’s also somehow one of the least expensive full-condo rentals in the area, so hit up your crew and snag this place before the owners realize that someone from Dallas or L.A. would pay quadruple the amount they’re charging.

#4) If you need the cheapest option

The Crested Butte Hostel, at $44 per night, is the cheapest Airbnb available in the area. The hostel has a communal kitchen, laundry services, free parking, quick access to the ski area shuttle, and even allows pets. So if you’re taking a vacation just for you and your favorite canine, this is the best option. Additionally, while almost all other listings have a strict list of house rules, the hostel’s only rule appears to be that you check in after 4 p.m. The single review on the page says, “Great place to stay whilst shredding the gnar at CB! #powpow”. I’d take that guy’s word for it.

#5) If you’re looking for luxury

Damn. This house is a little off the beaten path, but the place looks unreal. You probably wouldn’t ever have to leave it if you didn’t want to - it’s got a massive kitchen, incredible views off of its two decks, and a section of the Slate River in the backyard where you can fish and swim. You name the amenity, and this Lincoln Log mansion has got it. This rental is for the type of vacation where mom and dad want to golf or chill by the fire, but you just want to bike or ski. Because from this place, you can have it all.

P.S.: If you stay in any of these rentals, play by the rules and don’t piss off the locals. You run the risk of contributing to their housing problem or, if you really get in someone’s way, ending up on the Crested Butte Bitch and Moan Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/645750745560038/).

Be respectful. Look up trail rules and regulations, don’t disrupt the neighborhood you choose to stay in, and as always, leave no trace. Good luck, and treat yourself to a vacation in one of the most beautiful parts of Colorado!
