Snowboarder Identified in Fatal Perisher Terrain Park Accident

A tragic accident in the Front Valley terrain park at Perisher, Australia, claimed the life of 22-year-old Utah snowboarder Drew Youngquist on Tuesday, August 12.

Perisher Resort said the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m., prompting an immediate response from ski patrol, NSW Ambulance, and NSW Police. Despite extensive resuscitation efforts, Youngquist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Originally from Salt Lake City, Youngquist grew up skiing at Snowbasin before finding his calling in emergency response and mountain safety. He had worked as an EMT, first responder, ambulance driver, respite provider, and ski patroller. Last winter, he served on patrol and as medical staff at Utah Olympic Park.

Since June, Youngquist had been based in Jindabyne, just 30 minutes from Perisher, working with outdoor education company Action Learning Initiatives. He was on track to graduate this year from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Emergency Medical Services, specializing in Wilderness Technical Rescue. He had plans to become a physician.

Perisher Resort offered condolences to his loved ones, stating, “Our thoughts are with Drew’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
