Skiers Barely Escape Avy at Red Mountain Pass, Expert Explains Snowpack
Popular Stories
Nearly the entire western region of the U.S. has been experiencing high avalanche danger this January and Red Mountain Pass, CO is no exception.
Jeff Davis, expert at the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (an awesome backcountry resource) explains that skiers riding a southerly aspect triggered a persistent slab avalanche which was about 300 ft wide by 300 ft across. The slab ranged from 5 to 7 ft deep. Classified as an "R2, D2," this is the second major avalanche to be reported in that area in the last two days.
Davis said the area's southerly aspects have a persistent slab weakness that is "very alive." Near or above treeline the avy danger is listed as moderate, or 2 out of 5, although the official report warns of multiple weak snow layers.
