Brandishing a fresh, hand-cut downhill track, this year’s Canadian Open was a spectacle. Featuring gnarly chutes, slick roots, big rock rolls, and jumps galore, the track gave competitors more than their fair share of speed and fear. Named “1199”, the new course pays homage to the legendary late-Canadian downhill racer, Steve Smith. The number refers to Smith’s point tally when he took home the UCI World Cup overall title back in 2013.
“1199” has been called the gnarliest race track in North America, perhaps rivaled only by the infamous “Black Snake” raced annually for Italy’s Val Di Sole World Cup. Here is eight minutes of prelimenary carnage from practice:
The Canadians thrived in the steeps, going 1-2 in the Elite Men’s Category, with Jakob Jewett taking home the gold. Here’s coverage of his winning run (without sound, for some reason):

Winning by an astonishing 19 seconds, Austrian Vali Höll wiped the Elite Women’s field. It will be interesting to see if anyone can come close to the young World Champion this year. Here is her winning run, with commentary:
