R.I.P. Legendary Surfer Mikala Jones (1979-2023)

News of Mikala Jones’ death shocked the surfing world yesterday. He was 44.

The details regarding Jones’ death are yet to be confirmed, however it is presumed that he suffered fatal blood loss after severing his femoral artery while surfing off the coast of the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia.

Jones was known as a pioneer and respected as a legend in the global surfing community; and was a loving father, husband, and friend to many. His passion for life and surfing touched the hearts of many. The native Hawaiian was a staple of the barrel chasing scene in Hawaii up until 2016 when he relocated himself and his family to Indonesia where he continued riding some of the most picturesque waves on the planet. Jones accomplished much in his life including discovering word-class waves across multiple continents, countless cover shots and video parts and capturing mesmerizing GoPro footage, Mikala was easily one of the 21st century’s most iconic and photographed surfers.

Jones went out doing what he loved - a small silver lining to a senseless loss. Mikala left this world a much better place than when he entered it. Our deepest condolences go out to Mikala’s family.
